Kit Carson County is a farming community that lies within 15 miles of the Colorado-Kansas border, in the East Central plains of Colorado on the I-70 corridor. Kit Carson County produces the third largest harvest of crops in the state. I-70 runs through the county, connecting the eastern plains to Denver and the mountains.
Burlington is the county seat, with just under 3,500 residents, and is the center of trade and activity for the surrounding area. the town is home to the oldest operating carousel in America, bought from Elitch Gardens in 1928. For just a quarter you can ride one of the amazing varieties of original beautiful, hand-carved wooden animals to tunes played on the original Wurlitzer organ. You can also take a wagon ride to the Carousel from Old Town Museum. Old town is a 6 1/2 acre historical complex with 21 buildings restored with authentic artifacts representing the Wild, Wild West and embodies "life in the past lane". Old Town offers a soda fountain with hand dipped ice cream treats, many authentic old time shops and is open year around.
